I did that in 2001. I flew to LA, interviewed for 3 jobs, then a week after getting home I was offered my dream job. Over the next two weeks, I loaded all my stuff on a truck, sold the house, and moved to Los Angeles.
My secret is that being a Canadian citizen and being a highly experienced engineer, I qualified for TN status. Look up TN Status on Wikipedia.

If you want to work and live in the US, then you have to have an H1B visa.
The US H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ graduate-level workers in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise in specialized fields such as IT, finance, accounting, architecture, engineering, mathematics, science, medicine, etc.
Even though the H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa, it is possible to use an alternative visa to provide a new option.
